#39 Are you sure you’re at the right wedding?

We have filmed hundreds of weddings over our last 11 years. The dinner usually goes something like this. After the prayer, the toasts, the wedding party is served. We usually wait around for any antics, forks hitting glasses for a kiss, and the like, then we along with the photographers, the DJ’s, the coordinator and anyone else usually are seated at a table away from the action or even in another room. This is all fine and we will deal with the ins and outs of this scenario in number 37. This story however goes like this. Usually, all of us know each other and have a good time, keeping one eye on the clock, one ear on the reception and chewing as fast as possible to not miss any action!. About 13 times in the last 11 years we’ve been joined at our table by a very special guest. The guest is usually delightful and we thoroughly enjoy the company, however, we usually get the feeling from our table guest there will be “hell to pay” for the person responsible in the seating arrangements which forces this guest to join us. See, at least 13 times we’ve been joined by the “date” or “love interest” of a bridesmaid, groomsman and on one occasion a stepsister of the actual bride. Seems in all of the planning, many times, these folks are simply looked over. Most often happens when a single groomsman at the last minute ask a date to the wedding. We can usually spot this person and will usually figure she will be joining us for dinner. She is the one sitting by herself during the photography, crammed into the last row during the ceremony and knows not a soul except for her “thoughtful” groomsman! At the reception she is the person wandering around looking with casual terror for a friendly face to have a meal with amongst the revelers.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN: Have a few extra seats and assign someone from the wedding party to look out for these situations. At the rehearsal dinner ask to introduce everyone and if you have a situation like this, ask another guest to invite this guest to join them for dinner. The Photographer, Videographer, and DJ are usually without a doubt the most entertaining group at the reception but the lone guest will usually feel like a left out 3rd wheel when forced to eat with these complete strangers!
